Share These Stars | Dec 16th – Dec 22nd | Star Gazers

CONSTELLATIONS ARE IMAGINARY PATTERNS OF STARS
IN OUR NIGHT SKY. THROUGHOUT HISTORY DIFFERENT CULTURES HAD
DIFFERENT CONSTELLATIONS. SINCE 1930 THE INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL
UNION SET THE 88 CONSTELLATIONS THAT WE ALL USE TODAY. THESE CONSTELLATIONS ENCOMPASS EVERY STAR,
NEBULA, AND GALAXY IN THE SKY — GIVING ASTRONOMERS A WAY TO TALK ABOUT A REGION OF THE SKY — LIKE
ASTRONOMICAL LIKE WAYFINDING! THIS MEANS THOUGH, THAT A FEW STARS ARE SHARED
BY MORE THAN ONE CONSTELLATION. LOOK WEST AT 11PM ANY NIGHT THIS WEEK AND
YOU’LL SEE THIS GIANT SQUARE MADE OF FOUR STARS… THIS IS THE GREAT SQUARE OF PEGASUS,
THE FLYING HORSE. ABOVE IT IS ANDROMEDA; DAUGHTER OF THE VAIN
QUEEN CASSIOPEIA. AT THE TOP OF THAT SQUARE IS ALPHERATZ, BUT
EVEN THOUGH ALPHERATZ MEANS NAVEL OF THE HORSE ITS NOT PART OF PEGASUS, BUT OFFICIALLY IS
THE PART OF THE HEAD OF ANDROMEDA! COOL RIGHT? LOOK FOR SHARED ALPHERATZ TONIGHT WHEN YOU
KEEP LOOKING UP!
